About
The Palo Alto Speech & Debate Academy is envisioned as an after-school program for elementary/middle school students in and around the Palo Alto community, to run from September 2024 through April 2025. We’re currently doing exploratory research to understand community interest and help design our founding programs.
Why Speech & Debate?
-
Public speaking is the #1 fear in America (worse than death, heights, and spiders). But when learned and mastered, it becomes the basis for enduring self-confidence. To become a public speaker is to live with the courage to take initiative.
-
Skills like in-depth research, logical reasoning, and writing an argument are essential to succeeding in college-level academics. Speech & Debate is widely proven to drive academic acceleration, higher grades, and better test scores.
-
Speaking passionately, arguing persuasively, and listening thoughtfully are important in any workplace. As artificial intelligence makes collective knowledge more accessible, it also makes human communication more crucial.
-
The friendships that come from Speech & Debate aren't superficial. They're the result of partaking in an experience which challenges us emotionally, intellectually, and socially – the ingredients of friendships for life.
-
With unprecedented political polarization, deep cultural divides, and rampant misinformation, we need informed citizens who can see issues from multiple perspectives. Speech & Debate trains students to be both critical and compassionate.
-
Life is full of arguments, and Speech & Debate teaches us how to advocate effectively for ourselves and listen respectfully to others. It teaches us how to ask better questions, give clearer answers, and consistently get to the point.
